Milk thistle is a popular herb that has been approved by the German Commission E to promote a healthy liver. Blood tests show that liver enzymes generally improve by the ingestion of milk thistle. There may also be cellular improvements of the liver, as shown on liver biopsies. The active ingredient, silymarin, seems to function by displacing toxins that try to bind to the liver. Interestingly, it may also act as a free radical scavenger that helps to stabilize liver cell membranes. Milk thistle protects the liver as well as helps the liver to regenerate new cells.
